Mosquitos: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

Mosquitos are ⅛ – ¾ inches in length
They are easily identified by their long piercing proboscis (an elongated sucking mouthpart that is typically tubular and flexible)
After feeding on warm-blooded creatures, they will generally leave a small red itchy bump
The males and females can be differentiated by their antennae: males’ are bushy and females’ are not

Active Season

Mosquitos are active during the warmer and more humid months

Interesting Facts

Mosquitos are attracted to dark clothing
They use heat sensors around their mouth to detect a person’s body heat

Cause for Concern

Mosquitos can carry and transmit several lethal diseases such as Malaria or West Nile virus
Their regular non-disease transmitting bites can still be extremely itchy and irritating
