    Skunks: What you need to know

    Identifying Characteristics

    • Skunks are generally about the size of a house cat
    • They produce a foul smell that will often be noticed before the skunk itself
    • They are mostly black with white stripes
    • They tend to be most active at night

    Active Season

    • Skunks birthing seasons are early Summer and early Fall
    • They can have up to 10 kits (baby skunk) in a litter
    • Generally they are inactive during winter months

    Interesting Facts

    • A Skunk can accurately shoot its odorous spray up to 10 feet and less accurately up to 20 feet
    • Their diets consists of insects, grubs and small rodents

    Cause for Concern

    • Skunks will dig holes in yards causing damage to property
    • Their spray can be a nuisance to humans or pets, but they generally are not physically aggressive
