Ground Bees: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

Adult Ground Bees can measure from 9 – 13 millimeters in length with the females on the higher end of the spectrum
Generally noticed within large aggregations (burrowing/nesting areas)
The shape of their bodies closely resembles a Honey Bee however their color is less vibrant and mostly black, gray, and tan

Active Season

Active season is in late Spring
With increased heat and sunshine and consequently dry soil the Ground Bees tend to become far more active

Interesting Facts

Unlike the social Honey Bee, the Ground Bee (a.k.a. Polyester Bee) is a solitary bee
Female Ground Bees have an agent in their saliva that when combined with polyester from her abdomen make a waterproof substance very similar to a plastic
Each egg is planted in it’s own cell and sealed with “plastic” similar to a zip-lock bag

Cause for Concern

Sand Bees tend to nest in large aggregations thus becoming a nuisance
Can damage a lawn or garden by burrowing
