Chipmunks: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

Chipmunks are small brown ground dwelling squirrels and are generally 5-6 inches in length from nose to tail and weigh 2-4 ounces
They have two pale and five dark gray to black longitudinal stripes on their back

Active Season

Chipmunks have two breeding seasons; one from February to April and the other from June to August
During the winter chipmunks may enter long periods of torpor (a state of physical or mental inactivity), but they do not truly hibernate

Interesting Facts

Chipmunks have pouches inside of their cheeks in which they store food when foraging

Cause for Concern

The burrowing activity of Chipmunks can cause significant structural damage by undermining foundations, concrete patios and steps, retaining walls and sidewalks.
They may also be destructive to gardens when they dig up and eat bulbs and seeds or attack garden fruits
