Moles: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Moles average around 7 inches in length, with a 1 ¼ inch tail and weighing about 4 ounces
- Their front feet have large, paddle-like claws bent sideways for digging, but their hind feet are small and narrow, with slender, sharp claws
Active Season
- Moles prefer moderate temperatures and will typically go deeper into the soil during the hot summer and cold winter months
- They are more noticeably active during the late spring, early summer, and fall
Interesting Facts
- Moles have a similar appearance to mice and squirrels, however they are not rodents
- One mole can eat over 50 pounds of worms in one year, but their diet also consist of ants, spiders, and grubs
Cause for Concern
- The tunnels created by moles will often be utilized by other small animals
- Because mole tunneling destroys grass roots, the ridges brown quickly
- The mole will scrape the dirt away from the roots in search of food, thereby removing a plant’s source of nourishment
Town & Country Can Help
Our Recommendation
- In most circumstances, Town & Country does not apply a Mole treatment. Generally we would suggest to purchase Liquid Fence for Moles from your local garden store. It is very easy to use, and we have seen positive results when applied regularly. Please feel free to call us with any questions
