Grain Moths: What you need to know
Identifying Characteristics
- Grain Moths are about ¾ inches in length and have a wingspan of just under 1 inch
- Adults at rest appear to be light gray to dark brown, but in flight the rear wings are exposed and are a dirty white color
- Their larvae can be found throughout flour, grains and oats (not inside grains)
- There are several different common species of Grain Moths that include: Flour Moths, Indian Mealmoths, and Mediterranean Moths
- Commonly mistaken for Clothing Moths
Active Season
- As a pest of stored food, Grain Moths can be active indoors all year around
Interesting Facts
- Adult Grain Moths do not feed
- Their larvae spin silken webs that attach to food and wrap a cocoon for themselves
- Grain Moth eggs are placed inside kernels of food for their consumption as they grow into adults
- Regulations on bulk foods still allow for a small percentage of insects including the grain moth and many infestations originate from regularly purchased food items

Cause for Concern
- Grain Moths feed on and compromise stored food and make their homes in kitchen cupboards or pantries
- Their populations will quickly grow and continue to contaminate more food items

- Customers can attempt to identify the source by looking for webbing, larvae, chewed packaging, or beetles in dry foods or suspected source. The treatment can take up to 3 weeks to take care of infestation. If homeowner believes they have found the food source, save it for technician to confirm. We may recommend for customer to throw some foods away if needed.
- Please be prepared to be out of your home for 1 hour from the time we begin our treatment.
