Rats: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

  • Rats are generally no more than 13 inches in length from nose to end of tail
  • They are typically brown or gray, have small ears, and their tails are semi-naked
  • Their average territory is a 130 foot radius from nest

Active Season

  • Rats peak season is during the spring and fall
  • A female rat can have 4-7 litters per year, with 8-12 kittens/pups per litter
  • A wild rat generally lives 5-12 months

Interesting Facts

  • A Rat can fall as far as 50 feet and land uninjured
  • There is approximately one rat per person in the United States
  • Rats’ front teeth grow 4½ to 5½ inches each a year, but they wear them down by continuously gnawing on everything around them, including cement, brick, wood, lead and pipes

  • Rats have disease spreading potential (however, they are not known to transmit rabies)
