    Identifying Characteristics

    • Pigeons measure around 11 – 14 inches with a wingspan of 20 – 26 inches and weighing around 9 – 13 ounces
    • They have a dark blue-gray head, neck and chest with glossy green and red-purple iridescence around the neck and wing feathers, and white lower back feathers
    • They have 2 distinctive black wing stripes
    • The feral pigeon is found almost exclusively in areas of human habitation

    Active Season

    • Pigeon mating may occur during all seasons, but peak reproduction occurs in the Spring and Fall

    Interesting Facts

    • Because pigeons have monocular vision rather than binocular vision they bob their heads for depth of perception
    • The pigeon can see color in the same way that humans do but they can also see ultraviolet, a part of the spectrum that humans cannot see
