Carpet Beetles: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

Carpet Beetles range from 1 – 12 millimeters in length
Adults are round or oval in shape
Their light brown larval molts are often found and appear worm like with small hairs
The hairs or bristles on the abdomen of Carpet Beetle larvae can cause an allergic reaction of red bumps that are commonly mistaken for Bed Bug bites

Active Season

Carpet Beetles can be found indoors throughout the year but are more active in warmer and drier times of the year

Interesting Facts

A Carpet Beetles main source of food is dead skin cells and are used to fully clean human skulls for study
They will feed on materials such as dead plants, pollen, hair, dead insects and much more
Forensic investigators will often observe their activity to estimate time of death of humans

Cause for Concern

Carpet Beetles can damage items such as linens, carpets, and furniture while others can infest cupboards feeding on dead organic materials or pet food
Many people can have skin reactions to their presence which is often attributed to worse infestations such as bedbugs
Carpet Beetles cannot bite, but the hairs or bristles on the abdomen of the larvae can cause an allergic reaction of red bumps
