Bumble Bees: What you need to know

Identifying Characteristics

Bumble Bees measure between ½ to ⅞ inches in length
They are a hairy, social bee and usually black and yellow
They very closely resemble Honey Bees but are significantly larger
Their nests are usually found in dry dark cavities or underground

Active Season

Bumble Bees are most active during their mating season in Spring and early Summer
They remain active throughout the Summer and into the Fall

Interesting Facts

Fifty species of Bumble Bees are known in North America
Bumble Bee wings can beat as many as 240 times per second
They can visit up to 6,000 flowers in a day

While Bumble Bees will not damage brick work or wood, they do have a painful sting
